"These cadets are the leaders of the future, and many of the lessons they learn here will carry with them when they graduate from West Point," said Col. Mark Henderson, deputy director of C5ISR for C5ISR. "The time they spend with us helps them build strong personal relationships, especially with the acquisition community and the optimization processes they go through when bringing technology from concept to final product and ultimately into the hands of soldiers."

Henderson added, “Once they enter the workforce, they will always be able to turn to us, and this kind of communication helps us all.

During the internship, the cadets had the opportunity to speak with senior military leaders such as Lt. Gen. Laura A. Potter, Deputy Chief of Staff, G2; C5ISR Center Director Joseph Welch; Henderson; and others. Some instructors were able to spend the day touring the Pentagon, meeting key personnel and expanding their knowledge base.

In addition to the program's networking and leadership development opportunities, a key aspect of the program allows students to see STEM programs up close.

"By participating in the AIAD program, the C5ISR Center gives our future scientists and engineers the opportunity to apply their academic knowledge in practical situations related to the work of the Center," said Ralph Veney, Coordinator of the AIAD Center C5ISR. "When students graduate from West Point and enter, they can end up working in the same technology we're developing here. This experience allows them to begin with a general understanding of the skills. "

The cadets at the C5ISR center - all of whom had STEM related majors such as electrical, computer and mechanical engineering - were assigned to a project related to their academic degree. The program allows students to see how concepts learned in school can be applied to real-world situations.

"This program gave him the opportunity to really immerse himself in research and see exactly what we do," said Dr. Carolynn Moore, C5ISR Center physics and Infrared Camera Technology Division, is supervising Cadet Joshua Daffin this summer. "Experiences like this are helpful when it comes time to figure out what to do after graduation and build confidence in choosing a career path."

Daffin spent four weeks in the C5ISR Center's laboratory building a device using components that can be used to measure short-wave infrared signals. This gave the cadet experience working in the building and testing equipment for future use in the field.

"Achieving these kinds of successes as scientists and engineers is important," said Moore, noting that cadets have the opportunity to apply their school knowledge to a real-world problem.

Cadets must apply for the program through the US Military Academy, which has partnerships with many government and private organizations. Cadets accepted and worked two to four week internships during summer break. The number of AIAD slots is limited, and participation in the program is competitive.

"I can say to myself, the most interesting thing is that you learn all this at school, but when you get here, you see how professionals do it," said Cadet Nicholas Liebers, who recently participated in this competition. Institute's AIAD program.

In addition to learning about various STEM projects, the experience aims to provide cadets with experiences that will further their education and prepare them to become future leaders of our military.

“Most of the workers here are veterans, and have used weapons in combat areas. When they come back, they use the main lessons learned to improve the equipment," said Cadet Tristen Laney, a recent participant in the Center's AIAD program. "It's amazing what they're developing here, and I'd like to be a part of it in the future."

These educational partnerships introduce officials to the process of developing programs that directly affect national security and the skills that can be achieved through high technology. After that, our researchers get a better understanding of the military's operational needs.

Lincoln Laboratory offers membership to active-duty US military officers attending graduate school, often at MIT, or completing advanced education requirements at senior service schools.

For graduate students, military terms cover tuition and fees and require students to conduct thesis research at Lincoln Laboratory. Officers involved in the Service School program conduct research at the Lab while taking national security management courses at MIT.
